after this past winter that was so very intense, long and very cold (we broke the record in London, Ontario at minus 42c) my garden just like others has suffered. All my plants and trees were very late in starting to grow this Spring.
I have shared photos of my rose bush before (the above one is a year old) and told you of it's age which is over 20 years old as far as I have been told. Unfortunately it took a very hard hit by the cold of the last Winter, so bad that I was worried that I might have lost it for good.
It was all brown and black in many places and seemed to be pretty much frostbitten and dead. I took to it quite harsh and cut it down to it's last 12 inches. I bought special rose fertilizer to give it a boost and then stared to wait, hoping it would recover.
And it did!
It is very slowly growing new limbs from the root below the surface ...
... and it started to grow a few precious new buds ...
... and then a single little rose which made me so happy.
I had taken the above photos just over 14 days ago ...
... and these a few mornings ago and it is looking so much better already.
I know it is going to take a year or two to get it back to where it was but I am happy with that as long as I still have it.

ReplyDeleteSo happy for you that it came back. Looks like it came back from the roots. I would take special care with it this winter and give it some protection as those are new canes and will not be very cold hardy.... Just beautiful! Hugs! deb

My favourite roses! These at least have a scent, not like some of the newer and more showy versions. So glad you were able to save it!

ReplyDeleteclipping it back was the only thing you could do. Roses are so hardy. I always put fallen leaves or pine needles around the roots of my roses because of our cold winters. by summers end it will be as beautiful as ever.
