Silk Embroidery ~ Something New To Learn Again ..

Hello my dear friends,

I just love to learn new things like so many of you. I had come across silk embroidered butterflies on the Internet a while ago and feel in love with them and I so wanted to learn how to make them. All I needed was the book and kit which I found on the eBay but ...

... to tell you the truth, at that time I didn't want to invest $40 for the kit and shipping so I didn't purchase it and after a while the thought of learning this craft sort of faded away somewhat until last weekend.

I was out and about doing my shopping with my older daughter and we made a short stop at one of my favourite stores ... HomeSense. Walking around the aisles I came to the small crafting section and looked around but didn't see anything I was interested in. I returned 5 minutes later because my daughter wanted to take a look and then something in the far back part of a shelf, behind boxes of cards, caught my attention. At closer looking there it was ... the silk embroidery kit I had wanted to buy and at an amazing price of ...$4.99! Well, that wasn't a hard decision to make ... to buy or not to buy?...SOLD!

The kit includes the book, a marking pen, some needles and also some silk ribbon in 5 colors ~ everything you need to try this amazing art out.

This is the butterfly I saw and wanted to learn and now I am finally going to do so.

Perfect! ... Snowflakes which I love so much! Maybe I will make some pillows for Christmas using this technique but on a larger base with Hug Snug seam binding?!

I was very eager to try this out but my first attempt was a total failure and ended up in the trash (and no photo taken of it) but I didn't give up that easily and tried something I already was familiar with ... spider roses and together with another creation I love to make ... my little 'Heart~Felts', I created this.

My second attempt with silk ribbon embroidery, a new 'Heart~Felt' ...

... 'Spring Roses'.

It is far from perfect and I need to practice more and hopefully soon so I will get better at it but first I will have to purchase some more silk ribbon, so I am off to Etsy to do some shopping now.

Thank you for visiting me here at Todolwen and I hope you have enjoyed my newest creation.
It would be so nice if you were to stop by soon again.

I hope you are well my dear friends and life is treating you kind.

Have a peaceful and creative day.

  1. Isn't Silk Ribbon Embroidery satisfying? I have done a little of it over the years. I added some roses and peals and leaves to my oldest daughters blessing dress when her first baby girl was born. So it is Daughter's dress, embellished for granddaughter!

  4. I've enjoyed this art from time to time......there are wonderful books out there.....Ribbonwork is very relaxing but you need patience!!! My fav books are from Helen Gibb, she takes this art to incredible levels!!! There is also a reference book...A~Z of Embroidery Stitches.......from the publishers of Inspirations Magazine....it is the 'Bible' of stitches. Many publications come from Australia, very talented ladies there!!! I'm hoping to start to learn some Brazil work this summer........have fun!!
