Drop Cloth 'Strawberry Delight' ..

Hello my dear friends,

the idea to make little strawberries came to me when I was working on my needle books last week and my table was covered with drop cloth most of the time. Well, it wasn't only the drop cloth that inspired me but also a new treasure I had found.

I had bought this old tarnished sugar bowl because I loved the way it looked.

I knew right away that I wanted to turn it into a pincushion but I wasn't sure of how I wanted to embellish it and that is where the drop cloth came into it and the strawberries I had just bought for my daughter Caylagh. The idea was there to make this creation even a bit neater.

I was excited about it that I went to work on it right away and ...

... these are my little drop cloth berries in the first stage of making them but already looking really neat. I actually filled them with crushed walnut shells so that they will keep any needles sharp.

I had originally planned to cover the tops of the strawberries by embroidering them but it wasn't meant to be so I crochet the little tops from the embroidery floss instead and stitched them to the little berries and this is how they looked after it was done ...

... looking that tiny bit even sweeter and neater!

These are my first two different pairs. I had bought four different shades of embroidery floss so I made four sets of two strawberries with them ~ one as nice as the other.

And this is where the first two little berries now live. On a lovely tarnished pincushion.
It is the first one I have made that will be one of a small series which I have named ...

... 'Strawberry Delight'.

I got carried a bit carried away and took many photo in the beautiful morning sunshine just rising into my studio window so do please forgive if there are many the same ~ I just couldn't choose which ones to share, so I share all.

I kept this pincushion quite 'plain' for a reason ~ it gives it so much more charm.

  .

I am so please they way this creation has turned out. I love that it is so subtle and not too fancy but still very special looking in my eyes. I will be listing this piece it in my Etsy shop this week some time and I will let you all know when in a short post.

Last but not least ...

Please, don't forget to enter your name to my 'Grateful Giveaway' ~ the draw will be tomorrow, on June 2nd so there is still a little time. Just click on the button on the top of my right side bar and it will take you to the right place.

And finally ...

... I tried to alter a piece of drop cloth by dying it over the weekend.

What do you think?

Thank you for stopping by and visiting me here at Todolwen ~ it is always so nice when you do.

I hope you are well my dear friends and life is treating you kind.

Have a peaceful and creative day.

  2. Can hardly wait to see who wins your "giveaway"! The idea of dying the strawberry red is great and will make it the crowning glory on your pincushion. Love the ideas you come up with Karen.

  3. Love the dyed strawberries a very beautiful shade. The natural ones are pretty but the dyed are gorgeous. Another beautiful creation. :)

  4. Such sweet little strawberries! So much prettier than those that come attached to the tomato pincushions (never could figure out the connection between the two).

  5. That is lovely, love the neutral tones. I like making pincushions out of vintage finds too.

  6. Hi Karen, Your silver sugar bowl "Strawberry Delight" pincushion is lovely. I think the color combination of cream, silver and gold is very elegant. Thus, the neutral color of the drop cloth used for the strawberries paired with the gold crochet thread and silver of the sugar bowl is very elegant. I really like the red strawberry too, It's a little more earthly. I know you'll find the perfect place for it, something... woven/wicker?...pottery?... wood?...tin? Can't wait to see what you come up with. Hugs,

  7. Crushed walnut shells ... who knew!?!

LOVE the natural the best - although the dyed ones are pretty special, too. Way to go.

  8. Love this pin cushion Karen. I do like the dyed drop cloth also. I have three tarnished sugar bowls that I plan on turning into pin cushions. A quilting friend did something nice for me so I want to make her one. Your pin cushions are an inspiration. I believe I have three of them. xoxo

  14. I found a sugar bowl — no lid — a couple of weeks ago at the thrift store. I have hopes of making something similar to yours...I can only hope it turns out half as good! Thank you, as always, for sharing your talent with us.
